Pelvic Floor Disorders
Pelvic floor disorders are a set of illnesses affecting the pelvic floor, which is a complex network of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue in the lower abdomen. The bladder, uterus, rectum, and other pelvic organs are supported by the pelvic floor. When the pelvic floor becomes weakened or injured, it can lead to a variety of pelvic floor problems that cause discomfort, pain, and other symptoms.

- Pelvic Organ Prolapse: It is a disorder in which one or more pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, swell into the vaginal canal. This might result in discomfort, pain, and trouble urinating or passing bowel movements
- Urinary Incontinence: Urinary incontinence is a condition in which a person’s pee leaks involuntarily. This can occur when the pelvic floor muscles are weakened or injured
- Faecal Incontinence: Faecal incontinence is a condition in which a person’s faeces leaks involuntarily. This can occur when the rectum and anus muscles and nerves are injured or weakened
Pelvic Floor Disorders Causes:
Pelvic floor diseases can be caused by a variety of factors. Some of the most common are as follows: include:
- Pregnancy and childbirth: They can place a lot of strain on the pelvic floor muscles, causing them to weaken or become injured. This can result in pelvic floor problems
- Ageing: As women become older, their pelvic floor muscles deteriorate, increasing their chances of having pelvic floor problems
- Chronic constipation: It can induce straining during bowel movements, which can cause pelvic floor muscle injury and lead to pelvic floor diseases
- Obesity: Being overweight or obese can place extra strain on the pelvic floor muscles, weakening them over time and leading to pelvic floor diseases
Pelvic Floor Disorder Symptoms:
Pelvic floor diseases can cause a variety of symptoms, such as:
- Pain or discomfort in the pelvic region
- A bulge or feeling of pressure in the vaginal region
- Urinary or faecal Incontinence
- Difficulties urinating or passing stools
- Intercourse that hurts
- Pain in the lower back
Pelvic Floor Disorders Treatment:
Treatment for pelvic floor diseases varies depending on the kind and degree of the disorder. Among the most prevalent therapeutic options are:
- Pelvic floor exercises, commonly known as Kegel exercises, can help strengthen and enhance the function of the pelvic floor muscles
- Medications may treat symptoms associated with pelvic floor diseases, such as incontinence
- Surgery may be required in rare circumstances to restore or reinforce the pelvic floor muscles
- Making lifestyle adjustments including decreasing weight, eating a nutritious diet, and avoiding constipation can help prevent or manage pelvic pain
