What are Urinary Stones?

Urinary stones, also known as kidney stones or renal calculi,  are hard mineral and salt deposits that occur within the urinary tract.

These stones range in size from microscopic grains to bigger formations and can cause severe discomfort and suffering.

While small urinary stones may be asymptomatic and pass out on their own, larger ones may give rise to potentially serious symptoms and require medical intervention.

Types of Urinary Stones

Urinary stones are broadly classified into two types based on the location in which they develop. These are:

  • Bladder Stones: The stones develop in the urinary bladder. These are small in size and are made up of minerals like calcium, struvite and uric acid. These are linked with frequent urinary tract infections, benign prostatic hyperplasia and loss of bladder function
  • Kidney Stones: The stones develop in the kidneys. These can grow quite large and are usually made up of calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid, or cystine. These can be a result of certain metabolic/genetic disorders as well as unhealthy habits like low water intake.
