Menstrual Disorders

Menstrual Disorders

A Menstrual Disorder is referred to any anomaly or irregularity in a woman’s menstrual. Menstrual diseases are one of the leading causes of Gynaecological consultations in India, accounting for 14-15% of all Gynaecological visits, according to a 2017 study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. These illnesses can be caused by a variety of circumstances, such as hormone imbalances, hereditary factors, or specific medical conditions. Surya Hospital’s Gynaecology Department specialises in identifying and treating various forms of menstruation diseases.

Menstrual Disorders are classified into the following categories:

  • Amenorrhea: It is the lack of menstrual cycles in a woman of reproductive age. Primary amenorrhea occurs when a woman does not begin menstruating by the age of 16, but secondary amenorrhea occurs when a woman who previously had regular menstrual periods discontinues them for more than three months. Pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, certain drugs, and medical illnesses such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are all prominent causes of amenorrhea.
  • Dysmenorrhea: It is a condition in which a woman suffers from painful menstrual cycles. The discomfort can be slight to severe, and it is often accompanied by cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Dysmenorrhea is caused by the secretion of prostaglandins, which compress the uterus and produce pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers, hormonal birth control, and lifestyle modifications such as exercise and a balanced diet are all options for treating dysmenorrhea.
  • Menorrhagia: It is a condition in which a woman has excessive menstrual bleeding. The bleeding might be so severe that it disrupts daily activities and can lead to anaemia. Hormonal imbalances, fibroids, and other medical disorders can all cause menorrhagia. Menorrhagia treatments include hormonal birth control, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), and, in some situations, surgery.
  • Oligomenorrhea: It is a condition in which a woman has infrequent menstrual periods, with periods lasting more than 35 days. Hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, and certain medical illnesses can all cause oligomenorrhea. Treatments for oligomenorrhea vary according to the underlying reason and may involve hormone medication or dietary changes.
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): It is a collection of symptoms that many women experience prior to their menstrual periods. The most common symptoms include mood swings, anger, bloating, and exhaustion. Lifestyle adjustments such as exercise and a healthy diet, as well as drugs such as antidepressants and hormonal birth control, may be used to treat PMS.
  • PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder): PMDD is a severe version of PMS in which a woman has excessive mood fluctuations, anxiety, and sadness before her menstrual period. PMDD is treated with antidepressants and hormonal birth control.
