Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of physical, emotional, and behavioural symptoms that some women experience in the days preceding their menstrual cycle. These symptoms typically emerge a week or two before menstruation and diminish within a few days of the onset of menstruation. Surya Hospitals is a renowned gynaecology and obstetrics facility that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of gynaecological problems, including premenstrual syndrome

What exactly is PMS?

PMS is a prevalent ailment that affects many reproductive-age women. It is believed that up to 75% of women may suffer at least one PMS symptom during their menstrual cycle, with 20-30% experiencing moderate to severe symptoms.

PMS causes

PMS has no established cause, however, it is assumed to be related to hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle. There is a fluctuation in oestrogen and progesterone levels that can induce a variety of physical and emotional problems. Stress, a poor diet, lack of exercise and underlying medical disorders such as depression or anxiety can all contribute to the onset of PMS.

PMS Signs and Symptoms

PMS symptoms differ from woman to woman and can range from mild to severe. The following are the most common PMS symptoms:

  • Changes in mood (such as impatience, anxiety, and depression)
  • Tenderness and swelling in the breasts
  • Water retention and bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Cramps and pelvic discomfort
  • Food desires and appetite fluctuations
  • Acne

These symptoms often arise in the days leading to menstruation and fade shortly thereafter.

PMS Types

PMS is classified into two types:

  • PMS without an underlying Psychiatric Disorder: This type of PMS is distinguished by physical and emotional symptoms that manifest in the days prior to menstruation but do not interfere with daily activities.
  • PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoria): PMDD is a more severe type of PMS that affects a small number of women. It is distinguished by strong emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and irritability, all of which can have a substantial influence on daily activities and relationships.

PMS Diagnosis

There is no specific test for PMS. Your doctor may, however, request that you keep a period diary to follow your symptoms over multiple menstrual cycles. This can assist your doctor in determining if your symptoms are due to your menstrual cycle or whether there is an underlying medical disease causing them.

PMS Treatment

The severity of your symptoms and how much they interfere with your everyday activities determine how you treat PMS.

  • Mild symptoms may benefit from lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and stress management strategies such as yoga or meditation. Ibuprofen and naproxen, which are available on the market, can also help reduce cramps and headaches.
  • For moderate to severe symptoms, your doctor may advise you to use birth control tablets or other forms of hormone therapy. These therapies can help regulate your menstrual cycle and alleviate PMS symptoms.
  • Antidepressant medication may also be advised in cases of PMDD to help regulate emotional symptoms.
