Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a persistent disorder in which tissue that resembles the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. It is more common in women of reproductive age and can result in severe discomfort and infertility. According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Human Reproductive Sciences, the estimated prevalence of endometriosis among women of reproductive age in India is between 3-10%. However, due to a lack of endometriosis awareness in India, many instances go untreated and unreported. We provide complete care for women with endometriosis at Surya Hospitals, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care.
Causes
Although the specific cause of endometriosis is unknown, various theories exist. According to one such theory, some of the menstrual blood goes back via the fallopian tubes and into the pelvis during menstruation, where it implants and develops. Another hypothesis is that endometrial tissue is transported to other areas of the body via the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Genetics, hormonal abnormalities, and immune system dysfunction are all possible causes.
Symptoms
The Endometriosis symptoms differ from woman to woman, but the following are the most common ones:
- Period discomfort: Endometriosis patients may endure severe menstrual cramps that are not eased by over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Chronic pelvic pain: Pelvic pain that lasts longer than six months and is unrelated to menstruation.
- Painful intercourse: Pain experienced during or following sexual intercourse, particularly deep penetration.
- Infertility: Endometriosis can create scarring and adhesions in the pelvis, making it difficult to conceive.
- Bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea may occur in some women with endometriosis, particularly during menstruation.
Diagnosis
Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose because many of its symptoms coincide with those of other illnesses. Endometriosis is diagnosed at Surya Hospitals using a mix of methods, including:
- Pelvic exam: Your doctor may feel for lumps or cysts in your pelvis during a pelvic exam.
- Ultrasound or MRI scans can help see any abnormalities in the pelvis.
- Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a small camera is inserted through a tiny incision in the abdomen to observe the pelvic organs and identify endometriosis.
Treatment
Surya Hospitals provides a variety of endometriosis treatment methods, based on the severity of the ailment and the patient’s treatment goals. Among the treatment options are:
- Pain relief: While some pain relievers may suffice for moderate cases of endometriosis, prescription pain relievers or hormone therapy may be required for more severe pain.
- Hormone therapy: Pills such as birth control pills can assist regulate hormones. The menstrual cycle is shortened, and endometrial tissue growth is reduced.
- Surgery: When endometriosis causes significant pain or infertility, surgery may be required to remove the endometrial tissue as well as any adhesions or scarring.
- Fertility therapies: Treatments such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), may be advised for women with endometriosis who are experiencing infertility.
Endometriosis is a chronic illness that requires constant therapy to prevent symptoms from returning. Surya Hospitals collaborates with the patients to create a comprehensive care plan that includes regular monitoring and follow-up consultations, lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and exercise, and emotional and mental health support.
