Types of Endometriosis

Depending on the area/organs it affects, endometriosis can be classified into the following types

• Superficial Endometriosis: Also known as peritoneal endometriosis, it is the most common and least severe type, characterized by the development of endometrial tissue on the abdominal lining, i.e. peritoneum.
• Endometriomas: Often referred to as chocolate cysts, these are the most common type of endometriosis, accounting for 14 to 77% of the cases. These tiny fluid-filled cysts are most likely to develop in the ovaries.
• Deeply Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE): It refers to the endometriosis that spreads deep within the organs. In rare cases, it can lead to scarring that binds the surrounding organs leading to a condition called frozen pelvis.
• Abdominal Wall Endometriosis (AWE): It is a rare type of endometriosis, marked by the development of endometrial tissue on the abdominal wall, primarily after a major surgical intervention involving the uterus.

What causes Endometriosis?
