Common conditions that affect children

• Eczema: It is a very common skin problem seen in kids, and is characterized by dryness, itchiness and red rashes. The condition generally begins during infancy and affects near about 15 - 20 per cent of children.

• Impetigo: It is a highly contagious bacterial infection marked by the development of red, itchy sores on the skin. It can be of several different types including non-bullous impetigo, bullous impetigo and ecthyma.
• Molluscum Contagiosum: Caused by poxvirus, the infection is marked by the development of benign lesions on the skin, throughout the body. The condition is contagious and spreads via direct skin contact or coming in contact with a contaminated surface.
• Ringworm: It is a fungal infection, marked by the development of circular, itchy rashes on the skin, which may overlap and even expand. It can easily spread by coming in contact with an infected person or animal.
• Acne: It is one of the most common problems seen in teens, however, smaller children, lying in the age group of 1 to 7 years, may also develop it due to hormonal reasons. In teens, it generally is a result of the clogging of hair follicles due to oil and impurities.
• Hives (Urticaria): The condition is marked by the development of red, itchy welts on the skin, often as a result of an allergic reaction. It can also be caused by excessive exposure to sun, an underlying infection or excessive exertion.
