Gynaecologic Oncology Program at Surya Hospital
Cancer is a group of diseases in which abnormal cells in the body divide and grow out of control. These abnormal cells can spread to other parts of the body. The study of Cancer is known as Oncology.
Gynaecologic Oncology is a highly specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancer and cancer-like conditions of the female genital systems such as the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, vagina, and vulva. It includes precancerous conditions, cancers, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory conditions like tuberculosis, and cancers affecting pregnant women.
Surya Hospital is equipped with an unmatched Gynae-Oncological department that envisions to provide supreme care and comfort for women with gynaecological cancers.
Understanding Gynaecological Cancers
This is the most common cancer among women in India. It affects the cervix (neck of the womb) and if detected in early stages it is completely curable.
It is the most preventable cancer and one that can be most easily diagnosed by routine PAPS smear, HPV DNA testing, and colposcopy — all provided by specialist gynaecologic oncologist.
Alt begins in the ovaries, located one on each side of the uterus. Every year, over 30,000 new cases are diagnosed in India. Ovarian cancer is an aggressive disease with over 75% mortality rate.
Good news is that new radical surgical approaches have drastically improved survival in ovarian cancer patients. Our gynae-oncology team is highly trained, experienced, and equipped for providing the best and the most advanced surgical approaches to ovarian cancer.
- Endometrial Cancer or Uterine Cancer
When a cancer starts in the uterus, it is called endometrial cancer or uterine cancer. Most uterine cancers are found in women who are going through or have gone through menopause. Each year, over 20,000 new cases are diagnosed in INDIA.
Treatment is essentially surgical and involves an extensive surgical approach. A gynecologic oncologist care benefits women with endometrial cancer through the provision of comprehensive surgical approach.
- Vulvar and Vaginal Cancers
These are quite rare and require special expertise to diagnose and evaluate the extent of disease, and then develop a plan for treatment.
Gynaecologic oncologists have had years of specialty training to acquire the skills needed to evaluate and treat all gynaecologic cancer including vaginal and vulvar cancers.
- Pregnancy Cancers
Cancers arising from pregnancy and cancers occurring during pregnancy are a unique set of diseases. Neither are the obstetricians, nor is the oncologist very comfortable dealing with this unique condition.
The gynae-oncologist, who has been initially trained as an obstetrician & gynaecologist and then later as an oncologist, has the specific expertise to deal with this unique condition.
Gynaecologic Cancer Symptoms
What are the signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancer?
“The signs and symptoms shown here are often related to gynaecologic cancer. However, not all women with gynaecologic cancer have the same symptoms. And sometimes symptoms are difficult to recognize because they may be caused by or related to other conditions. That is why it is important to pay attention to your body and know what is normal for you. “
