Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent hormonal condition affecting women of reproductive age that affects 5-10% of people globally. While data on the prevalence of PCOS in India is insufficient, it is estimated that one in every five women of reproductive age is affected by this disorder. This suggests that PCOS affects a large number of women in India, making it a critical public health concern. It is a complicated disorder that affects several physiological systems, including the ovaries, adrenal glands, and the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis.
We understand the difficulties and concerns that accompany a PCOS diagnosis at Surya Hospital’s gynaecology department. Our skilled gynaecologists and endocrinologists are committed to providing each patient with personalised care and treatment strategies.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a syndrome marked by hormonal imbalances that interfere with a woman’s menstrual cycle and ovulation. Women with PCOS frequently have elevated amounts of androgens (male hormones), which can cause irregular periods, acne, and excessive hair growth. Furthermore, women with PCOS frequently have several tiny cysts on their ovaries, which might disrupt normal ovulation.
Causes:
The specific origins of PCOS are unknown, but various factors have been identified as probable contributors to the condition’s development.
- Insulin Resistance: Insulin is a hormone that aids in blood sugar regulation in the body. Women with PCOS have increased insulin levels, which can lead to insulin resistance. This means that the body is less able to utilise insulin properly, resulting in high blood sugar levels and an increase in androgen (male hormone) synthesis.
- Hormonal Imbalance: PCOS is characterised by a hormonal imbalance in the body, including increased amounts of androgens and lower levels of oestrogen. The exact cause of this hormone imbalance is unknown, however it is assumed to be connected to insulin resistance and other variables.
- Genetics: PCOS tends to run in families, implying that the disorder may have a hereditary component. However, the specific genes involved in PCOS development have not been discovered.
- Lifestyle: Certain lifestyle factors, such as a poor diet and a lack of exercise, might also contribute to the development of PCOS. These variables can cause insulin resistance, weight gain, and other health issues that increase the risk of diabetes.
Symptoms:
PCOS symptoms differ from woman to woman, but the following are some of the most common ones:
- Period irregularities: Women with PCOS may have fewer than eight periods per year or periods that are extremely heavy or mild.
- PCOS can result in excessive hair growth on the face, chest, back, and other parts of the body.
- Acne: Acne on the face, chest, and back can be caused by high amounts of androgens.
- Weight gain: Many PCOS-affected women experience weight gain and find it difficult to decrease weight.
- Infertility: Due to hormonal imbalances that impact ovulation, PCOS is a prevalent cause of infertility.
Treatments:
Our gynaecology department at Surya Hospitals provides a variety of PCOS therapies, including:
- Changes in lifestyle, such as weight loss, regular exercise, and a nutritious diet, can help manage PCOS symptoms in many individuals.
- Drugs: We may recommend birth control pills, metformin, or anti-androgen drugs based on the patient’s symptoms.
- Fertility therapies: For women who are unable to conceive owing to PCOS, we provide a variety of fertility treatments, including ovulation induction, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), and intrauterine insemination (IUI).
- Surgery may be required in rare circumstances to remove cysts or other growths on the ovaries.
